- Farms were prosperous and full of grains/ fruits and flowers in abundance
- Dried and withered vegetation/ no pollination/ everything started to die
B. Animals
- Birds in the sky/ Fish in the lake and pond/ animals running on the field
- No sound heard by the birds and most could not fly/ Fish died/ young animals survived only a few days
At once prosperous and peaceful, the problems in this town were caused by the people.

A. Arsenic
- Arsenic is used to kill weeds and insects. It can also kill livestock, wildlife, and people
B. DDT
- Synthetic organic compound that’s used to kill insects but not harmful to human
Chlorinated Naphthalene’s- cause hepatitis and liver disease
C. Dieldrin
- Five times as toxic as DDT when swallowed but 40 times as toxic when absorbed into the skin
D. Aldrin
- Cause degeneration of the kidney and liver.
E. Endrin
- Most toxic of all

Death of birds
A. In Illinois and Alabama, birds started to disappear
- Michigan State University found out the link between death of robins and spraying of elm trees
- They found out that earthworms were contaminated by the poison and that is what caused the birds to die
- Another scientist found that trees were sprayed twice a year with DDT
- Population of American eagle decreased and study has shown that they had an exposure to DDT
Chapter 9- Rivers of Death
i. Death of fish
A. Massive number of fish were killed
- Threaten of budworms in the forest in British Columbia- DDT was sprayed over the forest and the river
- Insects and fish were found dead- Salmon died of starvation even though it wasn’t affected by DDT
- In Rhodesia, it has shown that even a small amount of DDT resulted in death of all life in the pond

i. Gypsy moth
A. Campaign to kill gypsy moth
- In 1869, it was released into United States and spread throughout the northeastern states
- Agriculture Department proposed that they would eradicate it
