He pointed the dangers of one of Nicaragua's volcanoes and Panama offered less risks. In 1902, America purchased the Panama Canal Company for $40 million. America was required to get permission from Colombia to take control of the land. The U.S. government offered $10 million to the Colombian government, followed by yearly payments of $250,000. But, Colombian government declined. During the time, Panama was trying to gain independence from Columbia. Dr. Manuel Amador Guerrero traveled to the United States in 1903 to seek support for a rebellion in Panama. November 2, USS Nashville anchored in the nearby harbor. Within a week, several more U.S. boats arrived to force Colombians away. America quickly granted official recognition to the new nation of Panama.
