The human papilloma virus is a virus for which no cure is found. It is passed on from one person to the next through skin to skin contact of the reproductive organs during sexual intercourse or any other skin to skin contact of the reproductive organs. In most cases, your body's immune system defeats an HPV infection before it creates warts. When the virus doesn’t go away on its own, it can cause serious health problems. These include genital warts and warts in the throat. Genital warts appear as flat lesions, small cauliflower-like bumps or tiny stem-like protrusions. In women, genital warts appear mostly on the vulva but can also occur near the anus, on the cervix or in the vagina. In men, genital warts appear on the penis and scrotum or around the anus. It takes 15 to 20 years for cervical cancer to develop in women with normal immune systems. It can take only 5 to 10 years in women with weakened immune systems, such as those with untreated HIV infection.
