The main plot is more or less the same in both media. Camp Half-Blood is surrounded by a protective barrier thanks to the sacrifice of Zeus' daughter, a demigod-turned-tree named Thalia Grace. At the end, the golden fleece is only used to restore the camp's protective barrier and resurrect Thalia. The story is told from Percy's point of view, and he describes his adventure in great detail.
In the film, Percy meets Tyson, having not known of his existence before. Grover does end up with Polyphemus, but ends up there because of Luke. The son of Hermes still works to bring back Kronos, and is successful in this film.
While the group was able to steer clear of Charybdis in the book, they were swallowed up in the movie, but managed to escape. Also, the golden fleece is used to resurrect not only Thalia, but Annabeth as well, as a manticore managed to end her life. The story is not told from anybody's perspective, nor is it narrated. The adventure is actually shown to the audience.
The Sea of Monsters is less detailed in the movie than it is in the book. Films can be harder to understand because they tell the story in a limited amount of time, so concrete details are often omitted. Movies can make up for this by keeping the viewers interested.
