The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan is a fantasy-adventure novel based on Greek mythology that can be dissected using Joseph Campbell’s Hero Myth. The Hero’s Journey in the story is the following: I. Separation/Departure A. Call to Adventure
Percy Jackson’s mundane existence is a troublesome kid with a peculiar case of dyslexia and ADHD. He gets himself kicked out of every school he has ever been to.

Freedom to live Percy Jackson has earned the right to live and freely chooses where to go. With this he made a promise that he will be back at Camp Half-Blood next summer and survive a year outside of camp until then with his mother.
The Archetypes in the Hero Myth
1. Hero – Percy Jackson is the central figure in the story
2. Shadows – The three main antagonists in the story are Ares, Luke and Kronos
3. Mentor – Chiron the centaur provided guidance for Percy before he was even aware of the world of the gods. He showed Percy the ways of a true hero.
4. Herald – The Minotaur killing Sally Jackson brought the call of adventure to Percy.
5. Threshold Guardians – The forces that stood in the way of our heroes were the three Furies, Medusa, Echidna, Procrustes, Cerberus, and Hades.
6. Shape shifters – Luke and Ares demonstrated a shift in loyalty by the end of the story.
7. Tricksters – Grover Underwood provided the comic relief during the quest lightening the dramatic tension of their deadline.
8. Allies – Annabeth Chase and Grover Underwood provided reliable and capable allies during the quest
9. The Goddess – Nereid the spirit of the sea was the female figure who aided in the heroes’
