In tenth grade, when stacks of SAT vocabulary word lists are piling on my desktop and tortured me for weeks, I was more determined than ever to find a way to etch those five-syllable words deeply into my mind. I delved into the ocean of vocabulary, searching for patterns among them and categorized according to several common features. Then I jotted down all the related words--synonyms, antonyms, homophones, and so forth--to forge a chain of words conducive to memorization.
