I met with Joy Ahern, the Health Promotions Supervisor at the Metropolitan Council. Joy’s responsibilities, on top of managing individuals in the Health and Wellness group within Human Resources, are to collect health related data, presentations on health topics and pre-planning health and wellness promotions with Council wide facilities. Growing up Joy lived a life many would only dream about.…
I’m also excited to see what my classmates have been up too. On Monday, October 9 was our third health fair meeting. I was so excited to see what everyone had been up too and any new ideas they came up with. We started by sharing our letters and clip art with our professor.…
AAIP wants to take a moment to thank you. You are making a difference. Your role in a healthy future for Native Americans is creating change. AAIP wishes to partner with you in reaching its mission, “To pursue excellence in Native American healthcare by promoting education in the medical disciplines, honoring traditional healing principles and restoring the balance of mind, body and spirit”. We also went onto entering another competition for recycling and we won 2nd in that also. We won $500 in total for our whole…
I have volunteered for the BPSOS health fair each October for the past three years. The BPSOS (Boat People SOS) is a nonprofit organization focused on helping refugees. This organization sponsors free health fairs held in Norcross, GA with many health services for anyone who stops by. The services include influenza vaccines, various types of screenings, and physical exams. I volunteered with doctors and nurse practitioners at the bone-density screening booth, where I helped with the screening of osteoporosis for the underserved population.…
How do you summarize 16 years of life into a few minutes? Especially the life of a medically fragile child. I’m going to do my best. Our journey with UI Children’s Hospital began 16 years ago when our daughter Reagen was born. She was transferred to UI Children’s Hospital from our local hospital when she was three days old.…
After joining the Events Committee, I realized that bringing volunteers together could allow me to impact the causes I cared about on a grander scale. I decided to create the Breast Cancer Awareness (BCA) club at my…
It was my first day of training. UCSD Medical Center (or whatever the name is). First stop: Emergency Room. As I walked inside I saw doctors and nurses bustling about. To my left a resident was stitching up a bicyclist who had been in an accident.…
It was the first day of our medical mission trip. The 13 of us were divided into four group: triage, clinic, pharmacy, and faith. Colin, Laure, and I sat in plastic white lawn chairs, facing the locals who sat on three wooden benches. We had prepared a short, spiritual lesson to bring Jesus’ love to the rural cities of the Dominican Republic. When I welcomed them in their native language, their faces softened.…
The most challenging leadership role I have undertaken is being President of the Sutherland Cancer Awareness Club. This is my first year as President and the Club has created a goal of raising $2,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society. I think this is achievable but will require a large amount of effort from each of the club's 55 members. The main difficulty is two-way communication with some members, particularly the younger students who are new to responsibility and don't always fulfil their commitments. I try to be a patient mentor and highlight the importance of persistent and consistent effort in achieving our goal.…
My clinical experience so far has been quite interesting, because I learned basic clinical procedures and preventions that I know will benefit me as a nurse in the near future. During lab, we discussed infection control, personal hygiene, and isolation precautions. These procedures impact my personal health and wellness, because I need to ensure that I am using the proper techniques in order to keep me safe. Also, I know that it is important to make sure my patients are not at risk of developing hospital associated infections.…
It’s 0500 in the morning, and Taylor is getting ready for her first clinical as a paramedic student. Taylor is 5’2, looks as though she is 12, and has a heart larger than life. When people would ask why she chose the career field she is in, she would always respond with a smile, “I’m an adrenaline junkie, and this gives me a fix like no other.” People often wonder what inspires people like her to do what they do for people they don't know, and it all comes back down to something as simple and being the light in the dark, the calm in the storm, and hope amongst the chaos. Working in a field that is so demanding of your energy, your time, and your emotions, can really drain someone.…
The Wellness Fair: Reading Response I have decided to write about the wellness fair held on September 28 as opposed to the chapters of Just How Stupid Are We that are being forced upon us. Why did I formulate this decision, you ask? That happens to be simple.…
I am proud to say that I found my purpose in life. Being a nurse is my calling and it is a privilege. I am called to nursing and found it so meaningful and enjoyable to work and serve the public. I have enough compassion for my patients. I believe I was suited for this.…
This summer I did my internship at Miller Children’s Hospital. I had a great experience where I was able to apply my knowledge and skills. This fall I am back at Miller and I am ready to learn more and get the hands on practice I need to be successful in my career. Some of my fears are approaching new people and even though it seems very repetitive of meeting new people I think it’s difficult sometimes building rapport. Sometime I am just scared of not being able to build the connection with my clients.…
