Under Jim Crow laws, a landlord could legally slam the door in your face if you were Black or put up a sign on the building reading “Negroes Need Not Apply” telling you that no matter how qualified you were to rent or buy the home, you don’t need to bother because the landlord didn’t like the color of your skin.
