Patients on a waiting list for transplant organs have to wait months or years to have a potential donor. Cloning the organs would cut the wait in half. Therapeutic cloning also has the ability to end certain diseases. Similar to Embryonic Stem Cell Research it could end the pain and suffering of cancer patients or people with other diseases. Couples who cannot reproduce on their own have the opportunity to have a child. By removing cells from one or both of the partner’s doctors could then genetically create a child to be fertilized by an egg. Homosexual couples who want to have children could do so with reproductive cloning. By removing 23 chromosomes from each partner they could then be mutated and fertilized. Professor John Harris, director of Manchester University’s Institute for Science, see’s positive benefits in reproductive cloning which could have a place in society. He said: “If you take a healthy adult’s DNA and use it to create a new person by cloning you are essentially using a tried and tested genome, one that has worked well for several decades for the donor. By contrast, a child born naturally has an 8% chance of succumbing to a serious genetic abnormality because of the random selection if their DNA. You can avoid that with a clone.” Not only does it give the possibility of children it gives the possibility to also cure diseases. Unlike therapeutic cloning the stems cells do not necessarily have to be used to do so. By genetically mutating an unborn child’s genomes family heredity could be erased. Before fertilization a scientist could remove the genes from the parents that cause the abnormalities. By doing so the child could have an expanded healthier life. (Source
