For both marijuana and most tobacco products, one has to inhale the smoke from burning the drug. Out of using this drug, the number one concern is how addictive the substance can become after using it a couple of times. Marijuana has only ten percent of all its users become addicted to the use of the substance (Sanders). This potentially means that marijuana could easily be one of the least addictive drugs that an individual could use. Compared to the legal drugs that are readily available to adults age 18 and over, this may seem like a better option to take when choosing what drug they want to use. When talking about tobacco, however, “Smoking can cause cancer; and not just lung cancer, although that is the type that immediately comes to mind. Oral cancer, throat cancer, and even pancreatic cancer can spring from a history of smoking. Tobacco use in the form of chewing tobacco can also cause cancer in the gums, lips, and tongue. Other cancers that are often linked to smoking include liver, bladder, uterine, and prostate cancer” (Jansen). Out of the possible tax that could be imposed on marijuana product sales, the government could receive a large sum of tax revenues that is comparable to those of alcohol and cigarette sales. Marijuana has been medically safer to use than both alcohol and tobacco products, which are horribly damaging to one’s body. Marijuana, however, is believed to be a dangerous gateway drug and many people worry that if marijuana is legalized, then worse substances will have decreased restrictions. This is all just worry because most people who use marijuana do not move on to worse substances and marijuana will almost always be illegal under federal laws.
