The motive of Sullivan travel seems to be his wife. Since his wife is Cuban and his daughter is half Cuban, Sullivan gets sucked and gets involved in to the Cuban Issue. He sort joined the Cuban community and going through the ritual of becoming a Cuban by traveling there. Sullivan in his essay was narrating the struggle he faced and the struggles other Cubans faced. The purpose of his essay was to open our eyes to a political issue that has existed for a long period of time.
“A Prison, A Paradise” story is very emotional to read compare to “Summerland”. One can tell he deeply moved by the Cuban, and his wife’s family affairs. He tries to rely the story of every person in a sympathizing way despite the way some of the locals treated him. Nonetheless, he is deeply connected to his wife’s family and moved by their hospitality and pay close attention to every detail about them.
