In 1976, A. L. Guenther put forth the notion that our criminal justice system is “unfair, harsh, and biased,” as well as saying that we have a criminal processing system and not a criminal justice system. While these statements may have been made four decades ago, they still ring true today. I agree with Guenther’s comments, as our criminal justice system is unfair to the offenders they deal with, carries out harsh penalties on these members of society, and is biased to different groups over the history of America. Offenders are usually treated like statistics, not like members of society.…
In the movie M, the criminals themselves captured the culprit for the murder of the children and they are holding a “criminal’s court” or “Kangaroo Court.” In this trial, the audience can see no matter what the circumstances are procedures and trials are important. Despite that these people are criminals; they are still holding a trial to convict the murderer and to punish him for the crimes that he committed. However, they did not employ the full extent of the law (procedures). Criminal law is a system of law that has to do with punishing those who commit crimes.…
Hypothesis: although indefinite sentencing appears to ignore the rights of the individual in favour of the protection of the community; as one item of choice in a raft of sentencing options, it has improved the capacity of the criminal justice system to protect individual rights and keep peace and order in society. The Criminal Justice system is a system of laws and rulings aiming to protect community members and their property. It determines which events causing injury or offence to community members are criminal offences. Criminal offenders may be punished through the law by fines, imprisonment or community service.…
What would be the point of incarceration if the individuals behind bars didn’t actually learn to reform their behaviors? This might seem like a logical question, however, it is a problem that America faces with its legal system today. The programs that exist in prisons are mainly focused on physical work and seem to be closer to slavery rather than reform. In modern penitentiaries, prisoners are expected to serve their time while being reformed and readied for acclimation back into society. American citizens cannot expect a former inmate to assimilate back into society if they haven’t actually learned any skills that enable them to do so.…
We are told that laws are here to protect us and the common good, but what if certain laws harm us? Slavery was considered a constitutional right and was upheld many times in court even thought massive amounts of Northern disagreed with the laws. And rightfully so! Should they have respected these laws that made people property? I hope not.…
eHRAF Research Paper Criminal justice systems are the processes created by governments or ruling agencies to maintain order and punish crime within a society ("The Criminal Justice System"). One universal criminal justice system does not exist, instead, they vary from society to society. These systems are important because they help to uphold order, enforce norms and mores, and shape the values of a society. I have only researched the criminal justice system of the United States government, so I am only familiar with the structure of a large government.…
Discussion #1 There are many different learning expectations to have when taking the Intro to Criminal Justice course. The first personal learning expectation I hope to achieve is how the justice department works because it does become quite confusing in certain areas. There are some people who may see the rules of the criminal justice system as flawed and would like to know just exactly how it indeed works in day to day life. The reason I would like to know about this learning expectation is because I do plan to become some type of teacher in the education system, and teaching younger generations about how our justice system works would come in handy as I would then know exactly how it works due to this class.…
AFFIRMATIVE I affirm: Resolved: The abuse of illegal drugs ought to be treated as a matter of public health, not of criminal justice. I define the following key terms: Treated- to act or behave toward (a person) in some specified way to consider or regard in a specified way, and deal with accordingly: 2. to consider or regard in a specified way, and deal with accordingly 3.to deal with (a disease, patient, etc.) in order to relieve or cure.…
Even though this book is based on the criminal justice system in America, It makes you wonder if the cases would vary depending on where you are located in the world. This book defiantly will open people 's eyes to what is really happening in our society that is unknown to…
Prison Education and Recidivism Recidivism is the relapsing behavior of criminal activity after one is released from prison. Unemployment and countless of legal issues of crimes have been linked to recidivism. Many offenders are confined in the U.S prisons with the goal of a reconstructed life; however, a mass amount of these prisoners will be released with little to no options for employment. A criminal 's past education experience, correctional education experience, and the impact of the experience they took advantage of affects their options of future employment. Countless of prisons have experienced the effectiveness of correctional education programs in helping to reduce recidivism and improve postrelease employment outcomes.…
College is hard work but the reward you receive in the long run is more than worth it. Striving to have a career in a field that is forever growing and rewarding takes long hours, long days, sleepless nights and perseverance. Graduating from college with a Bachelor’s in Criminal Justice is something to be proud of and looking into the future fifteen (15) years from now, I will be working in a potentially great law enforcement agency supervising and watching over criminal offenders that are on parole or probation. A parole officer supervised people that have been convicted of a crime and have served time in prison for the offense committed. “When a parole board grants parole to an offender, that board believes that with some supervision the…
Many parts of the criminal justice system have been set up to seek justice for families and victims whom have been negatively impacted by crime. The criminal justice system seeks to find and fairly punish criminals for the crimes that they have committed. The system however, while having many good factors, also has some negative ones. There are problems within the police force, the court system, prison and jail, and the rehabilitation process. Movies and television shows can lead to people having a misconception of the truth of the criminal justice system.…
The previously discussed ideologies had several problems with the effects that they caused. The current correctional practices have problems that have caused the desire for crime prevention to become prevalent. “Almost all offenders are eventually released, however, and the problem returns unless it has been effectively treated while the offender was in prison” (Allen 57). The logic behind crime prevention is clear. Preventing crime is to prevent everything that follows the crime as well.…
Community corrections play a major role in the U.S. criminal justice system; and it attempts to provide an alternative to institutional corrections, which is mutually more beneficial to the State, the offender, his family, as well as the community. Its mission is to deliver services that contribute to safer communities all while reducing the hassles that the families’ of the offender, the State (in form of considerable expenditures associated), as well as the community face due to institutional corrections. Unlike many other facets of correctional-based sanctions, community based alternatives to institutional corrections are the best suited to minimize the “penetration” of offenders into the “system.” The main goals and objectives of community corrections are to reduce prison populations, protect the public, keep offenders (although under supervision) in community, reduce offender recidivism, generate cost savings and ensure community safety by rehabilitating offenders from prison which helps to break the…
The Classical school of criminology encouraged social control (Taylor, et al., 2003). The Classical school encouraged the state to react and be responsible of the criminal. The state was accountable for punishing the offender and providing public…
