The Phoenicians

The Phoenicians
The Phoenicians were the jack of all trades of ancient times. They were strong in all suits of life. They possessed great abilities, invented and accepted new ideas, and were powerful politically. The Phoenicians earned this title because of their culture, ability to trade, and their history. Culturally the Phoenicians were very influenced by those around them. The Egyptians and everyone in Mesopotamia brought their ideas to the Phoenicians. They brought practices such as blacksmithing, glass blowing, and wood carving. The Phoenicians themselves made the most important contribution, although they were very influenced. They created the Phoenician alphabet. It was a 22-letter alphabet in which was later adapted into the English alphabet known today. It was created in Byblos. From Byblos, the Greeks got their word for book, biblia, and became the English word, Bible. It also had a strong influence on the Greek and Aramaic alphabets. Phoenicia started around 3000 BC. Not to much is known from that time period about the Phoenicians. The Egyptians controlled and maintained the control of Phoenicia for a long time. By the 14th Century, Egypt lost that hold. Phoenicia was politically unstable. Phoenicia had two great cities at the time, Tyre and Sidon. As it has already been discussed, the Phoenicians were known for their stunning ability to trade and that was well known by 2000 BC. During the 13th century Phoenicia experienced a great flood and many cities were destroyed. Though Tyre was left intact and only part of Sidon was
