If I had a student who was struggling in class with my phonics approach, and needed a different approach, I would try several different strategies that we learned about in Chapter 7 of our textbook this week.
The first strategy that I would employ would be “Letter Actions a consonant based strategy” (Vacca, et al., 2015, p. 191,192). This strategy is great for those learning how to read, but having difficulty with the words. In this strategy the sounds of the consonants are associated with action words. For example, C could be used with words like cut or S could be used with words like sip. Additionally, this is a great strategy no only for struggling students, but also for ELL students. 206). This would give my struggling students a chance to feel confident if they were able to learn some of the words that are used everyday in many different ways. Teaching the students these words and then using them in activities is a great way for me as a teacher to give my students confidence in their ability to learn to read. As it states in the textbook, these words are used daily and are “grammatically necessary” (Vacca, et al., 2015, p. 209). If I have children struggling to learn phonics, I can help build their confidence with learning words that are used on a daily basis and in many different ways. For example, as a teacher I could read a poem to my students and then afterward have them use an orange or yellow crayon over the sight words or “high-frequency words” that are found through the poem. I could then progress to small books that they can read to themselves with these words in them to build their confidence in reading. The textbook also mentions that this is a good strategy for ELL students (Vacca, et al., 2015, p. 206). Being able to teach ELL students these constantly used words can increase their vocabulary. This helps many students to become more proficient in not just learning in school, but also out of school as they are better able to understand words and phrases used in everyday
