Euripides presents two Hecubas in his tragedy. One demonstrates a passive sufferer, who experiences grief and tragedy, but sill perpetuates a sense of stability. In contrast, there’s a vengeful Hecuba who loses her nobility and morality in her desire for revenge. The tradition of nomos becomes the link between the two presentations of Hecuba. Nomos envelops both of Hecuba’s conversations with Odysseus and Agamemnon.…
Two examples of other informal reading assessments are the Phonics Mastery Survey and Phonemic Awareness Assessments. The Phonics Mastery Survey is an informal tool for assessing various phonics elements. This assessment measures a student’s ability to recognize consonant sounds, rhyming words, consonant digraphs, long vowel sounds, words with CVC patterns, consonant blends, variant vowel sounds, and syllables in words (DeVries 2011 p.112). A student’s ability to use knowledge of sound/letter correspondences to decode words, determines his or her ability to read individual words. Knowing the skills that the students possess will assist the teacher in selecting reading tasks that offer the most effective reinforcement of those phonics skills.…
Indigenous Writes by Chelsea Vowel and Settler by Emma Battell Lowman and Adam J. Barker focused on the use of terminology as the main idea. Indigenous Writes talked about the proper terms to use when referring to both the Indigenous and the non-Indigenous. On the other hand, Settler primarily looked at those who colonized Canada, discussing the terms to utilize and the injustice that surrounds their identity. Despite their differences, both of these pieces gave a unique perspective and some deep thought into things we do not tend to think of in our everyday lives.…
English can be one of the most difficult languages to learn. How does one even learn how to speak English? In the article “War of Words,” by Trish Crawford she wrote about a couple of methods to learn English words, such as phonics and whole language. Phonics is one of the oldest ways in teaching someone new words, and was first introduced into the school system in the early nineteen hundreds. Phonics is where one uses sound and symbol relationships to figure out the word parts, and then puts them together to form words.…
In Plato’s Symposium, multiple philosophical thinkers discuss, argue and critique the abstract concept of love and eros. Each thinker had their own fascinating way of describing this phenomenon, but two philosophers- Aristophanes and Diotima- sparked more questions and arguments than any others. Aristophanes was a famously known comical poet in the ancient times and Diotima was a woman who Socrates claimed to met years back who passed on her wisdom on the subject of love. Although both speeches are completely different in style, tone and context, both Aristophanes and Diotima essentially build off of each other’s ideas. Aristophanes's speech focuses on love being a desire for wholeness and instead of refuting this, Diotima criticizes this…

Through unfitting diction, setting seems inappropriately compared in The Dumka by B.H. Fairfield . Generally, the disproportionate contradiction the moods is due to word choice is evident in the poem. When Fairfield writes, “quite still, backs rigid, hands in their laps, and look straight ahead at the yellow light” (Lines 5-7), the description of the couple differs radically with the light. To clarify, yellow light contains a warmer connotation, but the diction used to depict the people embodies a colder feeling. Thus, the specific words chosen create an awkward comparison in the poem.…
This paper will describe the paintings of “The Annunciation” from painters Jan Van Eyck and Robert Campin. Even though the paintings are describing the same things I feel that there is more separating rather than bringing them together. Robert Campin was a Flemish Painter that was based in Tournai who made paintings for both middle and high-class civilians. Jan Van Eyck was also a Flemish Painter that was based in Burges who mostly worked very wealthy patrons. Jan Van Eyck’s “Annunciation” was painted on the exterior of the Ghent Altarpiece that was created in 1432 at the cathedral of Saint Bavo.…
In the Hawaiian language, aloha stands for much more than hello, goodbye or love. It has a deeper meaning of sharing (alo) joyfully (oha) of life energy (ha) in the present. Vero had taught Doroteya this and Doro kept this close to the matters of the heart. She found it interesting to her, and was engrossed by this inconsequential piece of data that provided no use to her at the moment and unaware of the voice at large. Her cerulean orbs were focused on dislocating the sand from the book as it was a Einstein classic and the foolish sand could batter the prized piece of literature.…

To start off I want to explain what brought me to this class. I have known that I wanted to work with individuals with exceptionalities since early high school, but I found a huge liking to the clinical side of things. I initially was looking at going into occupational therapy and my senior year in high school I shadowed a Speech Language Pathologist and absolutely fell in love. This is my second year at MSUM, but I am a junior credit-wise and have never thought about changing majors. I am also working on getting a minor in special education because it is something I love learning about and that knowledge will be extremely helpful in my future career as a Speech Pathologist.…
Language has been a part of society for as long as history can remember. What about language makes it so vitally important? How does language shape our society? In Speech Sounds by Octavia E. Butler, she explores the meaning of language and how it affects the world we live in. Butler uses a post apocalyptic setting to show the ways that communication are part of and define society.…
Prelinguistic Phase Case Study 1: Julia Talking to Mrs. Smith: 1. Some of Julia’s main strengths as they relate to her language and communication abilities are: • Her responsiveness to both you and your husband’s voices, gazes and things presented to her • Her ability to let you know when she is ready and willing to interact and communicate • Her sociability and overall cheerful demeanor 2. Some things that I noticed Julia has some difficulty with are: • Oral-motor muscle control, meaning that she has difficulty coordinating and maintaining the muscle planning and control needed when she is feeding. This could lead to issues later on when Julia begins communicative verbally.…
This radical form of the Whorfian hypothesis has received little support in the psychological community, for lack of evidence; however, a milder form of the hypothesis has been substantiated through methodologically rich experimentation. Language appears to have a biasing effect on a few cognitive functions, such as color naming and memory representations. In the area of color naming, several studies found that language is quite significant in determining the types of color mismatches that people of different languages will make. A deceased color naming vocabulary brings about color ambiguity when colors are very close together; whereas, with languages that have an enumeration of terms for color shades ambiguity is lessened. From these and other studies like them, it is clear that language acts as a sort of filter, preconditioning and categorizing our thoughts and perceptions (Fritz & Fritz, 1985).…
A simple reflex, when I saw Dadaist poetry for the first time, was “This is going to be so easy.” There was that voice, which most often haunts those visiting museums for modern art, whispering into my mind’s ear: “Psh, You could’ve done that, where’s the art in that.” Now, I technically know that that is not true, as we have been taught time and again in various institutions that art is a many-splendoured thing, but occasionally that derisive voice still pops into my brain. When Damian Hirst leaves a sheep sloshing around in dubious fluid it is “art”, when I do it, it is “unhygienic and clogging up the fridge”. Where is the fairness in that.…
