Physician assistants aren’t limited to working in just one area, they are spread amongst many different spheres of medicine. However, most PAs work in the primary care field. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 57% of PAs work in private physician offices. These private offices are generally under the authority of specialists or general practitioners and/or pediatricians. PAs have more flexibility in their schedules and less intensive hours working in this type of office (“Physician Assistants”). PAs are also commonly found working in hospitals. There is an increase in demand for them in hospitals because they can provide direct patient care for less money than a physician. They also allow the doctors to facilitate between more patients faster (D’Orazio, Donald 26-27). However, working in a hospital can be an immensely tough job. It requires a PA who is active and alert at all times so they can work through unpredictable scenarios. They are also subject to being on call and having shifts at any time, irregardless or holidays, weekends, or hour of the day. They are given many opportunities to explore a vast number of differing areas in the medical field, which may cause them to earn a higher or lower salary than the average. Since PAs are so versatile, they are in high demand in hospitals and primary care offices. As long as they receive doctor supervision, PAs hold a substantial amount of power in the medical field. They aren’t required to have as much schooling and as many degrees as people in other medical professions, but they are still given the privileges of executing tasks similar to that of doctors and NPs.
