With the goods and money that was traveling across the country came the possibility of outlaws trying to rob the trains. Some railroad companies employed the Pinkerton Agency to help protect the railroad personnel and the goods. As the agency grew, a code of ethics, known as the Pinkerton Code, was established for the detectives working for the Pinkerton Agency. The Pinkerton Code included that no bribes would be accepted, detectives would never compromise with criminals, partner with local law enforcement agencies, turn down cases that included divorce or the possibility of a scandal, never accept reward money, never raise the payment amount without the client’s prior acceptance, and keep clients informed on the case’s progress. This code was established at the birth of the agency in 1850. In 1856, Kate Warne was hired as the first female detective by the Pinkerton Agency (Dempsey, 2011, p. 8). She was a valued employee throughout her employment and a very valuable asset to the team. Mr. Pinkerton had her as a trainer for the new recruits and she was continuously helpful throughout her years at the agency.
