According to Boggess article there are 550 cases of deadly force per year and one third of those are considered unjustified. Boggess even mentioned that there are officers that go through an entire career without ever discharging their weapon. Police are justified in using deadly force when a suspect is trying to escape or a threat to officers and people in the community. In cases where police deadly force is unjustified it cause the community to react intensively and such actions by police can cause relationships between the people and the police community (Boggess 115).

Some of the people that support the use of heavy force actually serves as a purpose in society. People believe the use of heavy police force is necessary to help control crime. These people of society believe that police officers are entitled to do anything necessary to control criminal conduct and preserve justice for the greater good. They want as much force as necessary to apprehend all criminal suspects and to help bring quick justice. Heavy police force has a effect on crime. Three main factors come into play and those are certainty of protection, severity of punishment, and celerity of punishment.
