Allyson Wells Media Social Responsibility The information media has great social responsibility to its communities, to the Ameri-can Culture, and to the world. Individuals, organizations, government, church, and other enti-ties generally do not mind when the media makes mention of their existence, services, products, and achievements. Depending on the information being shared, they do not mind the public be-ing aware of negative news. However, they expect the media to have accurate and credible in-formation. People are able to access and retrieve information on their cellular phones, laptops, desk computers, and other devices. There are people who spend more time consuming news and information electronically than reading a book, spending time with their family, exer-cising, etc. Surprisingly people are becoming journalists on social media by giving the public their point of view and gathered information from the news and social media. The credibility of each person who does this is rarely questioned. People are entertained by non-professional journalists. Social media allows people to customize their area of expertise and collect follow-ers who are interested in what they have to say. Instant and returning followers create an ongo-ing need to continue private yet public journalism. Oddly people spread what they hear and read among their friends by sharing the information electronically and verbally. My daughter created a Back to School haul on YouTube where she discusses the latest in fashion for teen girls. She shares online shopping tips and stores, unbeatable prices, and current trends. Within 24 hours of posting her first video she obtained two followers to her channel. The idea of her being able to influence other teen girls inspires her to do more. She seeks new information to share. She typically does not care to speak publicly and is very quiet. However, she comes to life on social media and talks for at least 45 minutes. Instant information has made the newspa-per and magazine concept seem more like ancient resources for retrieving news. People talk about everything from health issues and exercise, crime, religion, relationship topics, sports, food, leisure, finance and other topics of interest and concern.
