The appropriation of the work creates a sense of humour, a characteristic of postmodernism, in contrast to the previous work which had a more serious subject matter. The audience is left questioning the work, and feels emotional towards it’s meaning. "Criticism and the Lover A” represents the postmodern style as it crosses the boundaries and draws from several art traditions.
