Let us describe the mechanism of the drugs Pramlintide. Common brand name: Symlin
Pramlintide is a drug that work synonymous to amylin. “It works by slowing down food digestion. This prevents blood sugar from rising as quickly after you eat,” (drug.com, 2000-2017, p.1).
Amylin is part of protein hormone that is secreted along with insulin by the beta cells of the pancreas and help to regulate blood sugar level by inhibiting glucagon secretion and slowing the rate at which food leaves the stomach,” ( FARLEX, 2013-2017, p.1). Glucagon is a protein hormone; its function is to raise the concentration of glucose in the bloodstream.
Due to pancreas damaged because of type 1 or type 2 diabetes, amylin secretion is drastically …show more content…
Pramlintide inhibits the glucagon secretion, and slow the concentration of glucose entering our bloodstream.
How Pramlintide (inhibitors) interact with the glucagon (target).
Liver cells are the enzyme’s active site. Pramlintide is a competitive inhibition; it is so similar to glucagon. It binds to the receptors on liver cells (enzyme’s active site) and block the glucagon from binding to receptors on the liver cells. “Pramlintide prevents glucagon from binding to the specific receptors on liver cells,” (quizlet, 2017, p.52). This action prevents blood glucose from increasing. It, “lowers blood sugar in three ways. It slows the rate that food moves from your stomach to your intestines, which keeps your blood sugar from rising too fast. Symlin also lowers the amount of glucose (sugar) your liver produces. Lastly, pramlintide triggers the feeling of fullness after meals to help control your appetite and decrease how much food you eat” (Drug.com, 2000-2017, p.1).
