In the article “Creative Music Therapy with Premature Infants: An Analysis of Video Footage” (2014), Friederike Barbara Haslbeck claims that creative music therapy may be particularly effective to pacify, engage, and empower premature infants without being overwhelming (5). Ognean and others elaborate on their claim by conducting a case study where they conduct tests to see the difference in a preterm child when they are breastfed and when they are not. From this article, it shows an "increased incidence of late preterm deliveries and the continuously accumulating evidence that breastfeeding is an important contributor both to increased short and long-term morbidity" (15). Lower rates of breastfeeding are significant contributors to neonatal morbidity both on the short and long-term in late preterm infants (LPI). Ognean and colleagues elaborate on the factors that are associated with lower rates of breastfeeding at birth. Compared to infants that are not fully breastfed, the infants which are only breastfed had lower Apgar scores (which calculates and summarizes the health of newborn children), increased rates of anemia at birth, and a longer time period admitted in the neonatal intensive care unit. The identification of factors that affect breastfeeding rates may assist medical professionals to implement effective strategies for breastfeeding success in late preterm …show more content…
One of the factors that contribute to a preterm birth is stressful life events towards a mother-to-be and substance use, alcohol or drugs the woman consumes. Another factor that also contributes to the early birth of children is the age of the mother. “Results indicate that clinical, programmatic, and policy interventions may need to address upstream stressful life events prior to conception, especially for adolescents, to reduce the prevalence of preterm birth and improve maternal and child health” (Witt, et al. S79). A number of premature babies is not as big as expected; however, that does not remove the importance of it. Additionally, there are many different types of therapy a woman can do with her child that will help increase the baby's chances of survival; however, either not all woman know about it, or are committed enough to do it. The causes of premature birth are based on the mother’s substance use, stressful events, and their age; however, a child can have his or hers survival rare increased with the help of their mother, whether it be changing a form of nutrition to being committed to maternal
