There are many sources which show the effectiveness of prisons in a negative way, such as re-offending statistics but nothing really solid on the good outcomes of individuals going to prison and if the prison system works. The aim of punishment in prison is to ensure that people do not reoffend and stay safe in the community and keep the public safe but with prison rates increasing and the number of crimes increasing it is debatable whether or not these aims of punishment work in prisons. Due to how prison conditions are, for example how offenders are treated in prison it has been debated whether or not these circumstances are healthy and will help offenders to become a better citizen. It has been argued that, yes these conditions do help to make offenders a better individual when being released but also on the other hand does it work for everybody? Prisons now use systems like the restorative system where they sit offenders, and victims together to discuss their issues and talk about the crimes which they have committed. These have been seen to work and to help individuals when coming back in to society. (Klassen 2009) This suggests that the criminal justice system is trying to help offenders in any way to ensure they know they have done wrong but also try and build them to know
