The Japanese had used Australian prisoners as and Asian labourers to build the railway road whilst they lived in camps day to day. From the background of the photograph you can see one of the handmade shelter using wood and straws of trees. This demonstrates what the living conditions were like in different types of weather without being fully sheltered and in warm clothing. Therefore, this photograph demonstrate the filthy and cold lives Australians had lived through during World War Two in Thailand and Burma.
This photograph helps people understand what Australians experienced during World War Two through the image colour, people and background presented. The contrast between black and white of the image creates a feel of a dull and impoverished life. The three men’s facial expression within the image are showing a feel of pain and depression. In the background, it is evident that they had stayed in camps that were filthy and small huts that were old and dying.
