Antidepressants were developed in the 1950’s. An antidepressant is a medication used to treat mental disorders or depressive disorders (depression). Mental disorders include: social anxiety disorders, anxiety disorders, and dysthymia (mild chronic depression). A medical illness that involves the brain is considered depression. Having lack of energy, feeling sad, having thoughts of suicide, and etc. are symptoms of depression (AHRQ). Since the 1950’s, antidepressants have been the most overused drug on earth (Medical). The usage of antidepressants are increasing by the minute. According to the Medical News Today (MNT) article, in the year of 1996, nearly thirteen million people were users of antidepressants (Medical). According to Jon Jureidini and Anne Tonkin, the possibility of harm from the overuse of antidepressants has attracted far less attention (Jureidini 623). Many antidepressants are overused all over the world. Should antidepressants be prescribed for the people whom are not mentally ill?
