The pros of using indeterminate sentencing is that it has hope in rehabilitation. “The goal with this system is to fully rehabilitate individuals back into society.” (N.A, 2015, pg.1) Not everyone will be incarcerated forever so, yes transitioning back into the community is an important aspect. Also, another pro would not be so much control in other people’s hand. It is better just to serve the given time rather than having a board of people wave the possibility of freedom in their face just to take it away. Now, negative aspects would be overcrowding of prisons. By giving fixed sentences, more and more inmates are increasing and this will in turn cost money for tax payers.
In conclusion, one might say that determinate is the safest route to keeping the community safe. There are both positives and negatives to each form of sentencing. It is not to say that one is against indeterminate sentence, because there are positive outcomes that come from this form of sentencing.
