One twenty three year old prostitute, according to the New York Times, was raped at gunpoint, but was afraid to tell officers that she was in that line of business as that could easily shift their willingness to help her. Instead she lied and explained that someone who she thought was good smarttrain came out to help her when she ran out of gas. She stated, “Whether they are there to protect you, or out their to lock you up, you didn’t want to find out. When prostitutes are exploited in such a way, they do not know who to turn to for help. They cannot turn to police since what they are doing is criminalized and highly stigmatized and because of this they are left in the dark to go through extreme levels of violence, they are left alone exposed to verbal abuse and physical assault, and the harsh reality of this is that most of that same violence that they endure comes for the very same hands of law enforcement. Why? Because prostitution is illegal. They see prostitution as a “danger to the social fabric” (Willamette law review). That is that the laws against prostitution is created in an attempt to defend society 's expectation. Reality check: Prostitution has existed for a very long time, and it will not go away. There will always be men ready to pay and women willing to sell for sex. And with the use of the internet and social media, it has only increased. And the best way to take control of this is by legalizing prostitution.
There is a very negative image on prostitutes because of society 's moral dilemma. People seem to picture the worse. A prostitute can be anyone, and you may not know it because many who do participate in this choose to hide it because of the disapproval that they face from others. It could be a struggling mom, or even just a regular college student in need for money. It is time to break these social barriers and legalize
