However, African-American men and men with a family history of prostate cancer are considered high risk and should being testing at about age 45. Test that are used to screen for cancer include a blood test for prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and digital rectal exam (DRE).
The Prostate-specific antigen is produced by the columnar epithelial cells of the prostate and periurethral glands, so therefore PSA has some function in the prostate and its secretions. It is produced by both malignant (cancerous) and benign ( noncancerous) prostate tissue. Prostate cancer causes the breakdown of the barrier that causes the PSA to escape into extracellular fluid resulting in a higher amount in the blood. Before making any decision about the right choice for treatment, age, the stage of cancer, PSA level, histological grade, and comorbidities should be taken into consideration. Furthermore, since prostate cancer has a major impact on the quality and health of one’s life, it is important for older men to check their PSA measurements and get a biopsy done when PSA is elevated. However, men with a life expectancies of less than ten years, it is unlikely for them to benefit from early
