Although there are advantages, there are also limitations why applying psychodynamic to the school. First and foremost psychodynamic is a long term commitment which may not be obtainable within a school setting due to the amount of students a counselor must see. In addition, this theory relies on the personal childhood history that many students may not be open to sharing which affect the amount of time it takes to get to the root of the issue (Henderson, 2016). Through this theory, counselors must not accept factors outside the idea of what they believed are influenced by thoughts and behaviors, which the analysis of the student is subjective to interpretation by the counselor (Henderson, …show more content…
In regards to advantages, there is an abundance of research that find family therapy to have an effect with a wide range and relationship problems (Henderson, 2016). When counseling a family as a whole, it gives better insight to the student that results in a more effective change. This approach allows for counselors to work with the family that lead to greater awareness, understanding, and sense of purpose, which strengthen the family as one unit (Henderson, 2016). A limitation within this theory is the obstacle of not being able to integrate the family into the process at the same time, delaying the change (Henderson, 2016). Another limitation within a school setting, is being that there is a cultural diversity, many families do not find it appropriate to share family struggles or failures with a counseling, impeding the overall growth of the family
