As mentioned earlier, eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa come coupled with the extreme desire to lose weight. A dieter with such desire may do anything to lose weight including becoming malnourished. For example, someone with anorexia who eats little to nothing and exercises multiple times a day is not getting enough calories or nutrients to refuel his or her body from the strenuous exercise. The European Journal of Clinical Nutrition states, “It is very well known that the most common feature in AN and BN [ anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa] is an obsessive desire to lose weight together with an exaggerated fear of becoming fat, leading to a particular type of malnutrition in both syndromes” (Gomez et al.).
Particularly, having an eating disorder associated with malnourishment has serious results. The most serious being death.
