Schools across America were disproportionately segregated for many years. A quality education was only afforded to the rich and powerful. Education was not attainable for minorities, especially in the south. African American citizens were often disenfranchised and at a disadvantage. Those who were allowed to go to school had to learn under some of the worst conditions.
