The purpose of the study was to look at how African-American students experience racial microaggression, and how it impacts them. The study also looks at how African-American students react to the microaggression, and how it affects campus climate.

The topic is important. African-American students are faced with a lot of challenges when it comes to completing their education. Several believe that they are not welcomed at some institutions because of the color of their skin. College are experiencing incivility in multiple areas. Institutions should not be places were microaggression should be continued or ignored. Some would like to believe that because of the elimination of segregation and because of integration and affirmative action policies that minorities still do not face aggression in school, and do not understand how this can affect them academically and emotionally.

The authors used focus groups which allowed the African-American students to share their racial climate experiences on their college campuses using a critical race theory (CRT). A grounded theory approach was used to investigate the concepts of racial microaggressions and the college racial climate.
