I have chosen to write my essay on sexual assault on college campuses in the United States. This is an issue that affects a specific group of people; a large percentage of men and women are attacked every year on college campuses, having countless negative effects on the education and overall lives of these victims. It is a very serious issue that needs to be addressed nationwide in order to prevent further sexual assaults. This is an issue that can be studied from several sides of anthropology, for example educational applied anthropology, and feminist anthropology. Where children become adults, away from the guardian’s watchful eye, exploring and learning new things every day, trying to make a name for themselves, this is the college experience. Despite any rivalries or traditional competitions, all universities have one thing in common, and it is the culture of the campus. Every university shares a certain atmosphere of confused adolescents, burnt out from studying, but simultaneously experiencing a caffeine buzz from the local Starbucks. However, there is a darker, less openly discussed subculture on campuses, and every young women entering college has to consider how dangerous the campus can be. Rape and sexual assault on college campuses have become almost commonplace, with statistics climbing year after year. This is an extremely serious issue that affects specifically college students, and most often females. These sexual assaults have an impact on the victim’s education, as well as every other aspect of their lives. For these reasons, looking at rape culture of college campuses from a psychological theoretical approach, a feminist anthropology point of view, and an education applied anthropology point of view is important.
