Weber’s Theory
Max Weber was a German sociologist and philosopher, who was known to be one amongst the three founding fathers of Sociology. Weber’s main focus was not to understand what we do but instead why we do them. “Verstehen” was German for understanding, which refers to comprehending the reasons someone has for their actions but also understanding their point of view, in other words, putting oneself in the shoes of another individual (Hughes,p. 91). He believed it was important to understand the purpose and reason behind one’s actions. One of Weber’s main themes was to understand the process of rationalization and how it has had an effect on capitalism and the way our world is today. …show more content…
Like stated previously, the rationalization of the Calvinist religion influences the economic gains and introduces capitalism. Since everybody feels the need to work as much as possible for the sake of God’s glory. Everyone must do the same thing and just like the poor, even the richest need to work in order to eat. “A man without a calling, thus lacks the systematic, methodical character which is, as we have seen, demanded by worldly asceticism” (PESC2, p. 161). Since no one knew who will be saved by God, they just worked in order to show their piety to him. If the individual accumulates wealth and property, they can live faithfully. They now become profit and material success as signs of God 's favor. They are no longer just working, they are assuring their spot as a member of “the elect”. It then …show more content…
The accumulation of wealth has become such an important factor in the every day life of everyone, that we are just focused on wanting more and more. We are stuck on not having enough which then prohibits us from enjoying what we currently have,. Although we no longer believe in predestination, I feel like the concept of work has changed since Weber explained how the Calvinist rationalized religion. When someone asks us what our occupation is, we say “I am what I do for living”. For example, an individual who teaches at a school says, “I am a teacher”. And the concept of working hard has also implied on us. We are mostly focused on working a lot in order to get money and be able to pay bills and maybe spend it on commodities. But we tend to feel bad when we are not working enough. The rationalization of religion is still important because individuals still believe that we deserve what we
