The number one reason student’s drop out of high school is due to a high number of absents. Students that have missed too many days of school, tend to struggle to complete their school work or fall so far behind they don’t see a point to try to catch up. According to EduGuide students who are absent 20 percent of their eighth grade year are more likely to drop out of school (Convissor). In addition, students who struggle in school and fail English or Math in eighth grade are 75 percent more likely to drop out of high school (Convissor). This problem could be prevented if a teacher took an interest in the student and took the time to give the individual one on one assistance to help them get caught up. By doing so, the student’s confidence and self-worth would also begin to rise, once someone else believes a student is worth the extra effort the student begins to believe it as well. Although, the educator may not have as much extra time as the student needs, another way to still accomplish getting the teenager caught up is to assign the student a tutor. A few students may be embarrassed by the fact that they need a tutor, a way to put the student at ease is to create a study group consisting of other students who are also falling behind or simply need some extra help. Although it is extremely difficult to focus on school and complete homework once becoming parents, there are possible ways to ensure an education. One possible solution is creating an alternative school focused primarily on young teen parents, which provides childcare while the parents are in class and job training. This would ensure that the parents can still receive an education for themselves, as well as the opportunity to properly care for and provide for their child in the present and future. Becoming a young parent is also very stressful, it would be beneficial to provide individual counseling as well as group counseling with other young parents who are experiencing the same types of situations. Forming relationships with other young individuals in the same situation could also create a strong support system giving the young parents someone to turn to in a time of need, as well as taking turns caring for each other’s children. There are countless reasons why students decide to drop out of school, because of this there are several solutions to this crisis. Students that are aware of alternative options will feel encouraged to stay invested in their education, and as a result they will develop confidence in themselves and create
