Repressed memories are memories that are kept hidden from yourself. Recovered memories are memories that were repressed but recovered during hypnosis or psychotherapy. False memories are memories that are distorted or imagined. There is no way to differentiate between the recovered memory to be true or false. However, some cases use a recovered memory to convict sexual abusers and send them to jail (pgs. 208-209).
2. Explain in detail the Atkinson-Shiffrin model of memory. (Three Stage Model)
The Atkinson-Shiffrin model of memory, or the three stage model, represents three stages that account for the length of time that information is held in memory: sensory, short-term memory, and long-term memory. Sensory memory is a memory system that hold sensory information for around 3 to 4 seconds. Sensory memories then are encoded in a sensory register, temporary storage device for holding sensory memories. There are different phonemes in all of the different languages. Morphemes are combined by phonemes and are the smallest units of meaning language. Simple words such as dog and cat, but also suffixes and prefixes. Complex words are made up of several morphemes. Syntax is the rules of grammar that determine the order of words in a sentence or phrase. This helps form both meaningful expressions and semantics. Semantics are the set of rules that help govern the meaning of different words (pgs.
