Rudy was put between speaking pidgin english or regular english. According to the author Puana he says ”My father embraced the Hawaiian way, while mother, perhaps in reaction, subscribed haole way when it came to her kids, my mom forbade pidgin in the house, dad spoke nothing but da kine pidgin.”(Puana P.11) This shows there is not only cultural differences in your appearance, physical, and the way they speak. They come in all shapes and forms. Poor, living off of welfare and having to “work harder not smarter.” Rudy was compared to a stereotype of a typical hawaiian and a typical hawaiian is not that rich and works and chases money to provide for their family because they need to feed their kids so they dont starve and doing their best to get the kids whatever they want whenever they want. Puana writes “ What they didn’t want us to become was what they called “Typical hawaiians” To them there were 2 types of hawaiians. Those who smoke ice at the bus stops given up on life before trying. Those who embraces hawaiian culture and wave protest signs.(Puana 49) This shows the different stereotypes of the typical hawaiian and they way that they are and how they behave in their environment. Also it shows what they do to make different stereotypes. This suggests that the parents don’t want their children to be the one of those stereotypes of a hawaiian they want their kids to be the successful hawaiians that preserve and change the stereotype of a Hawaiian. Based on this passage, I can conclude that there is cultural differences in physical appearance the way way that people do things or the way they act/behave around other people and public. In the end, there is always gonna be that typical hawaiian in society unless we prove the society wrong and show them that
