During my student teaching experience, I always tried make learning connect to my students lives. I did this by working hard to get to know my students. I always tried to ask them about their weekends, what they did after school and watch what interested them in the classroom. I watched what books drew their interest and what topics they asked questions about. I used this information to plan my lessons. We used flexible grouping to meet with students in small groups and individually. Students who struggled to understand how to solve math problems the first way taught were retaught it using a different method. For example, when working with the students on multiplication the students were taught it using the “lattice” method and the traditional method. Students began to choose which method they liked and understood best to use when doing their math. Students who struggled with remembering the steps of multiplication were pulled in small groups to receive additional instruction in the area. In this unit students also wrote multiplication word problems. Students used strategies learned in grammar and reading to prepare their word problems. I tried to incorporate music when teaching them hard to understand ideas. I noticed that the songs helped the students to remember what they were learning. I would hear the students singing the songs while doing their independent and partner work, as well as when they were in line and on the playground. For example, when teaching my students about the different parts of speech I found a noun and a verb song that helped my students to remember what they were. The songs gave the definitions and examples in a catchy tune which quickly stuck in the heads of the students as well as the adults in the classrooms heads.
