The experiences I participated in this last week are ones that I have been doing since I began at the Crisis Center in August. I did learn a bit about how to work with a diverse student population when visiting the school was Renee and Darius. I have never really worked with a diverse population until coming to the Crisis Center. As learned in my social work courses, it is important to treat each person as an individual, but not to single them out because of their differences. The majority of this school’s population is African American. Therefore, it would be wrong of me to make any judgmental or uneducated comments without being aware of what I was actually talking about. As a social worker, I will have to work with a diverse population at many points in my career. I believe that my courses have prepared me to do this. I feel confident in being able to work with those who may have differences compared to myself. I was grateful to have such an immersive experience because this is something that has definitely allowed me to put what I have learned in perspective.
