As a sophomore in college, I have interacted with various instructors over the years and have determined that there are typically two types of instructors. The instructor who is willing to put in the extra effort to assure a student learns the material and succeeds in their class, and the instructor whose goal is to present the information as required and expect the student to regurgitate the information back on exams and/or essays. The instructor of a course can ultimately determine the amount of engagement a student has, the overall quality of learning, and how efficiently students are able to perform overall in the class.

For example, I took a history course here at Bellarmine University last semester and encountered a professor whose primary goal was to relay the information to the class then have us memorize and regurgitate the information back to him in essay format. This professor taught only through lecture. He didn’t consider, nor did he honestly care, about the visual learners who could have benefited from visuals or PowerPoint slides to follow along with. After I failed the first exam, I approached this professor about alternative study techniques successful students had used in the past and he looked at me in a confused manner then proceeded to tell me to simply memorize the information. After meeting with him a second time after another failed attempt on the next essay exam, instead of giving me guidance on how I could improve my essay scores, he mentioned that I didn’t have the right learning capability and mindset to succeed in my major. My major, which is pre-physical therapy, had absolutely nothing to do with getting a decent grade on a history exam. This type of education did not allow me to flourish, instead, this professor destroyed my academic confidence in his particular course as well as made me question whether or not I really did have what it takes to be in my major program.
