My Experience
The phrase each student is unique also applies to teachers. Each teacher teaching style, instructional strategies, and relationships are unique to them. I only remember one two teachers I had that used different instructional strategies besides the basic “I lecture; you take notes” format. The two teachers were both math teachers, specifically geometry and trigonometry. I rarely remember just sitting the whole class period to take notes and listen to them lecture the class. They had the class move throughout the class period, eliminating the monotonous fifty minutes of listening to the same person talk. They both asked for student input and differentiated their lessons to keep students from being …show more content…
The two major ideas I want to change from my experiences are the use of literacy in science classrooms and differentiated curriculum. I understand that I will need to approve my practices with my administration and have their support before they will ever be fully effective. I want to use books in my classroom beyond a textbook. I do not want to be the teacher that teaches directly from a given textbook and never broadens their horizons beyond that information. Textbooks are excellent resources, but being limited to only one book does a disservice to my future students and the future minds of our …show more content…
I want to have a library in my classroom. Even if the books in my classroom library are not all content specific, they are still of a higher level of literacy. Also, with them not all being science specific, then it will be of interest to a wider range of students. Second, in science many times the names of many aspects of science do not come from the English language. For students to be able to recognize the root of words will be helpful not only in my classroom, but once they become adults. I want to teach students the roots of basic words of other languages and provide them resources to learn on their own. Languages such as Latin, Arabic, Greek and others are the majority of root words that make up scientific dialogue. This is one of many ways to provide diverse knowledge, fundamental knowledge, and a literate environment in my classroom
