Created on April 6th, 1793, the Committee of Public Safety’s main goal was to protect France from all enemies, both one the home front and abroad, to keep a close eye on the French government, and make decisions in times of emergency ("Committee of Public Safety." Originally headed by revolutionary Georges Jacques Danton, the power of members of the Committee were balanced, and the Committee itself did not exercise the dictatorial powers it soon would. With widespread success in most aspects, the Committee of Public Safety would gain the trust of the National Convention and the citizens in a small group of men, becoming more influential and dominant ("The Committee of Public Safety."
