A prophet’s ultimate purpose is to not only proclaim the divine promise, or God’s promise, but it is to also teach people about what it means to be a community of hope. The way prophets are able teach people about a community of hope is by emphasizing that those who live in poverty and are outcasts should never be forgotten because their suffering are reminiscent to the dark side of history. As said by John F. Haught in his book, What Is Religion: An Introduction, “Societies that exclude certain groups for the sake of homogeneity would lose their vitality, and so the prophets forbade such narrowing of social consciousness” (70). This is one of the reason why Christians, and followers of other prophetic religions, are expected to respect others in society who have different beliefs. In addition, prophets, such as Jesus of Nazareth, Muhammad, and Moses, are seen as figures that represent justice in the world, as a result for forbidding the narrowing of social consciousness. Although the dialogic response is used to understand and respect other religions, some may question the idea of people, who are non-Christians, having the ability to reach their true fulfilment, or salvation.
