Prior to The Renaissance the Catholic church was the center of the peoples lives. It was where the people drew there strength and where they turned in times of need as well as for guidance on all matters of life. It is for this reason that when the catastrophe that was The Black Death befell the people, they turned toward the church for savior. There prays and pleading seemed to go unanswered by their church and there god. The church could do little to prevent the backlash from the people, they were just as likely to fall to the illness as anyone, leading many to see the church as being no better than any other. The people had no idea the cause was a disease spread from lice carried by mice, with so much death they only viewed it as udder abandonment. So when the devastation passed, the people were not interested in turning to the church as was in the past, they turned to their own humanism.
