Humanism paintings and sculptures showcased humans in a superficial light and showcased their flawlessness. Humanism sculptures looked realistic and nudity was common. Gods were portrayed as perfect human beings, young and beautiful. Michelangelo’s sculpture of David acts is a great example for the portrayal of flawlessness. The sculpture of David was a continuation of the work from a man named Agostino di Duccio. Michelangelo’s statue of David is known to be his best work and is considered one of the best works of the renaissance. The statue of David is proportionate and very similar to the human body. The statue represents David after he makes the decision to battle Goliath, but before the actual battle occurs. David’s beauty, confidence and poise are showcases within Michelangelo’s structure. Although David was taken from a biblical tale, it showcases David as a renaissance figure rather than a religious one. The Biblical hero David and represented David standing victorious over the head of Goliath. Wearing no armour, with a sling as his only weapon, the sculpture illustrates David as a thinking, resolute being. The nudity and thoughtful face shows that is from the renaissance period. He is most famous for his 1492 expedition. He intended to travel to Asia and India to start trade. The king and queen gave Christopher Columbus 3 boats, Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria in order to help him on his journey. When he began his expedition, due to poor conditions he landed in the America’s, believing that he found India. Christopher Columbus was a man of the middle ages, he insisted the bible was a reliable map. He became very religious in later years. And just like the people in the middle ages, he lobbied a crusade. He wanted to capture Jerusalem and described it as God’s plan. People in the middle ages focused on being what God wanted them to be and the desire of ultimately gaining entrance into heaven. Christopher Columbus was important in the renaissance because he discovered America and discarded the theory of the world being flat. Financially, Columbus’s discovery brought in huge amounts of silver which made Europe wealthier. The importance of Christopher Columbus’s discovery is that if it wasn’t for him, the United States and the Americas might not have started. Columbus’s discovery allowed colonization to begin.
