Children with the mental disorder may not show signs and symptoms at birth, and may appear to be a normal child from the ages of one to two. Common signs of autism are repetition, avoiding eye contact, lack of interest in objects, wanting to be alone, social impairments, difficulty communicating, and regression in previously gained skills. Autism can occur in all types of people, ranging in different ethnicity, age, and socioeconomic groups; as well as ranging from mild to severe. This is because autism is a spectrum disorder. Autism is more likely to occur in males than in females with a ratio of four to one, with no current reason as to why. Being that the nervous system includes the brain, autism affects different parts of it. The thalamus and hypothalamus are responsible for the “fight or flight” reaction to situations. Studies prove that children with autism have an increased rate in the sensory input function, causing the brain to be dominated by the “fight or flight” reaction which can lead to increased stress responses in simple situations. That being said, autism causes the brain to function differently from what it normally would. Autism has no known cure. There are options such as therapy and medication that help lessen the stress of the disorder on the diagnosed person. Diagnosis usually begins with a hearing test, followed by a complete neurological …show more content…
Symptoms to look for when diagnosing rickets are delayed growth, pain in the spine, pelvis, and legs, and muscle weaknesses. Rickets weakens the bones due to a deficiency of vitamin D, causing them to have skeletal deformities like breastbone projection, bowed legs, and thickened wrists and ankles. People who have the disease generally appear different from those who do not because of the skeletal deformities in the body. Rickets can be inherited by a gene causing low levels of phosphate in the blood. Low phosphate levels make it more difficult for a person to absorb vitamin D from the sun, thus causing the deficiency. Due to the disease being X-linked, males are more likely than females to inherit it. One function of the skeletal system is to maintain posture. Rickets causes the bones to weaken and have deformities, which in turn also weakens the skeletal systems function to maintain proper posture for the
