When someone mentions rock music, I immediately think of loud music with guitars, drums, and an energetic vocals. I also think of it as my parent’s music that I rarely listen to. However, as I begin this course, I realize that my views are way too narrow, and that rock music is so much more than that. I thought I knew what rock and roll was, but now I know that I do not. There is so many genres and subgenres that I had not even considered when thinking about rock music. When I think deeper into what rock music is about, I see that it has so much more meaning than an upbeat type of music. If you actually listen to the lyrics of the song, you’ll often see that is representative of the views of the culture at the time it was written. Music in general is just a creative way to express emotions and thoughts, but rock seemed to have that special quality that really communicated the voice of a generation. Rock music is a cultural phenomenon that is representative of the changing attitudes of history. Before the 1950’s, the popular music was generally low-key and conservative. I was born in the late 1990’s, when hip hop and pop had taken the main stage away from rock music. Hip hop had taken its place as the rebellious music. Rock however, is not dead. It still has its place in communicating emotions and cultural views. It communicates those messages in a different way than hip hop can. Hip hop is about hearing those that are often unheard, and rock music is about relaying emotions and messages that the general public can relate to.
