Nurses perform many roles as they provide care on any given day. Nurses are educators, leaders, managers, providers of care, and members of a profession. They use the latest research and evidence-based practice to provide care to their patients. Nursing theories are also incorporated into the daily routines of nursing. A theory is “a method of perceiving reality and mapping the complex processes of human action and interaction that affect nursing care” (Houser, 2012, p. 135). Along with our values, these things provide the framework of how we take care of our patients on a day to day basis.

A person’s sense of dignity is influenced by how they view their own self worth and how they are talked to and treated by others. For instance, listening attentively to others as they are talking gives them a feeling of self worth. We as nurses need to promote positive self-worth by acknowledging the positive aspects of a patient’s life and respecting them as whole. Evidence-based practice shows that a positive attitude and positive self-worth leads to improved outcomes. We can help achieve these positive outcomes by being conscientious of others needs, calling all patients by their surnames or titles, and being patient while we are taking care of them. Attending to a patient’s personal appearance helps promote human dignity as wells. Cleanliness and a well kept appearance both promote self worth (Potter, Perry, Stockert, & Hall, 2013). I feel that it will open doors to other areas I have not even thought about taking on. With this degree, I will be more capable of management and educational positions in the health care field. If I choose to go on to be a nurse practioner or nurse anesthetists, I will have to have a bachelor degree to pursue it. It also opens doors to administrative positions and teaching positions. These are options that I may not want at the moment, but as I get older I may consider because bedside nursing is a strenuous physical occupation.
