A nurse has many roles in the healthcare field today, and those roles can differ due to the variety of nursing specialties. Nurse Anesthetists, Nurse Practitioners, Nurse Midwives, and Perioperative Nurses all have very specific duties and specialized knowledge in their respective fields which separate them. Even though some roles are limited to the classification of each nurse, there is a core set of skills and knowledge that every nurse must obtain in order to fulfill the title of being a nurse. The most obvious role is the physical care of the ill and injured through their knowledge of the science of nursing. The care that hospital nurses provide is often times through the administering of medicines and treatments, however caring for the comfort and emotional well-being of their patients is just as important. Nurses are also educators just as much as they are healers. The career that I was most suited for based on those tests was a Nurse Practitioner! Since I’ve nearly completed my first year at MSU, my love for the health sciences has only grown. I’ve learned that I have a great work ethic and have had great dedication to my studies. Through my resilience, hard work and countless hours of studying I have thus far earned excellent grades. I have volunteered in nursing homes, job shadowed in a hospital and, saw the practices of many types of nurses. The last experience I was shadowing my mother who is an ER Nurse Practitioner (and an MSU CON graduate).
