Everyday you use the road network to travel around your city, the Romans built a similar road network across their own cities as well. Romans found ash near the volcano Vesuvius. To the ash they added lime mortar and water. When this mixture dried it was hard and durable. Over time they perfected concrete and called it pulvis puteolanus. Without this material, the Romans couldn't have built their aqueduct systems, which brought water to the cities. Almost all of the Roman’s amazing pieces of architecture used concrete. Even though Roman concrete was made a long time ago, it still helps us today. A team of researchers from U.S analyzed a piece of concrete from 37 BCE and their findings could change modern architecture.
